Churchfield Community Trust has been awarded the 2019  Community Development and Continuing Education prize for the Lord Mayor Community and Voluntary Awards. 

Churchfield Community Trust has been named as one of the winners of this year’s Lord Mayor Community and Voluntary Awards. Churchfield Community Trust took home the award for Community Development and Continuing Education on the night for their ‘dedicated work in helping young men and women prepare for adult life by teaching them skills for the workplace’. 

This year the Lord Mayors received over 340 applications which judges say made it very difficult to cut down in order to have 4 candidates for each of the 5 awards, and the overall award. 

Churchfield Community Trust was set up in September of 1994 by the Presentation Brothers, Presentation Sisters and Christian Brothers in The Hut Gurranabraher, Cork opening its doors to at risk youths in the area. Since then the organisation has grown from strength to strength. Churchfield Community Trust now respond to a very specific group of young people who need intensive support, therapeutic interventions, stability and acceptance, to achieve sustainable change at a crucial time in their lives. 

Social Enterprise Initiatives feature as an intrinsic aspect of Churchfields’ core programme in the context of preparation for work through experiential learning and certification. Such social enterprise initiatives include Compass Crafts, in which community participates develop their skills in Churchfields propose built workshop in Knockfree and Ballyvolane, The Garden Café and their Horticultural Growing Initiative. 

The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge groups which, through their commitment to voluntary and community activities, have played a significant role in enhancing the quality of life in their communities.  Among the other winners of the night were Meitheal Mara who brought home the overall prize of the night, Sanctuary Runners, Mad About Cork, Blankets of Hope, Sanctuary Runners, and Children’s Leukaemia Association.
